About the artist
Joseph McCarthy has been involved in the arts since graduating from Greenfield Community College on the G.I. Bill in the early 70's. His early working experience was as a kilns man for Edward Marshall Boehm, a renowned porcelain maker. He then went on his own specializing in large ceramic tile installations. Inspired by the beauty of Martha's Vineyard he started using watercolors. Loving the fluid and spontaneous nature of the medium he is trying to capture the elusive, almost mystical quality of the island landscape. It seemed a natural progression to explore the use of texture and layers of color with acrylic and oils. These paintings are filled with light and atmophere, sometimes stormy, sometimes ethereal.
